Saturday, July 19th — McCain and “the Muslims”

July 19, 2008

Today I Learned…

…that a surrogate of John McCain’s — Bud Day, a member of the infamous “Swift Boat Veterans for Truth” campaign whose lies about John Kerry in 2004 torpedoed his presidential chances — said the following on an official campaign conference call:

The Muslims have said either we kneel or they’re going to kill us… I don’t intend to kneel and I don’t advocate to anyone that we kneel, and John [McCain] doesn’t advocate to anyone that we kneel.

This incendiary quote has not been repudiated by the McCain campaign, who have only responded with:

The threat we face is from radical Islamic extremism.

This is a bit of a sidestep — McCain spokesman Michael Goldfarb won’t explicitly say whether or not Senator McCain agrees with Day, attributing the threat to “radical Islamic extremism” rather than “the Muslims” in general.  While this is an important distinction to make (and a truthful one), the McCain campaign needs to disavow this hateful speech and perhaps even cut ties with Day.
